Slagbaai is a natural bay and degeneration of "Slachtbaai", an old Dutch word, which means, "Slaughters-bay". From this place, Dutch people transported the slaughtered and salted goats to Curaçao. Later they also began to transport salt from Slagbaai. There is still an office, several stores, a slaughterhouse and a house of a superintendent at Slagbaai. Dutch people made all buildings after 1868.
There is a small beach at Slagbaai and is a great place for snorkeling and diving. You need to leave Slagbaai at 4 p.m. as the park closes at 5 p.m.
There is a watchtower at Saliña Slagbaai to provide excellent birdwatching opportunities. The tower was built by the Dutch Army with the help of Washington Slagbaai National Park rangers. The building material was sponsored by Cargil. During the migration season, you can find 90 different species of birds in a week and we should not forget about our Flamingo’s, Lora’s, and Prikichi’s.
Since recently there is a restaurant located in one of the buildings of Slagbaai where you can have a lunch. They sell various drinks, sandwiches and burgers.
